Life on Roatan Island

I've decided to share with you the reasons why living in the Caribbean might appeal to you. Having traveled to many fascinating destinations around the world, I've found that the Caribbean offers unique advantages. Here are the reasons why living in the Caribbean could be interesting:

1. Year-round warmth and stable weather:

Unlike some destinations, such as Hong Kong, with high humidity, the Caribbean offers pleasant warmth all year round. On Roatán Island, where I live, it's around 24 degrees Celsius even in January, with the sea temperature around 28 degrees Celsius. The pleasant breeze and stable weather create an ideal environment where you can feel great.

2. Health benefits:

The favorable climate of the Caribbean has a positive impact on health. Personally, I've experienced how friends and I arrived with colds and fatigue from Europe, but within 48 hours, all symptoms improved. The sun, sea air, and ocean have a beneficial effect on health.

3. Embracing the mañana lifestyle:

By embracing the Caribbean way of life, you can find yourself in a world where people don't rush and let things flow at their own pace. Without stress and in peace, you'll experience mental well-being, which benefits anyone seeking an escape from work or business-related stress.

4. Unique sea and underwater life:

The Caribbean offers perhaps the warmest seas in the world, with small waves, warm shallows, and an ideal environment for diving. On Roatán Island, you can discover the second longest coral reef in the world. The sea is ideal for both children and adults, offering great conditions for fishing and diving.

5. Freedom:

The Caribbean provides a freedom that differs from the USA or Europe. Various aspects, such as transportation, regulations, and others, are the subject of a separate blog. Believe me, freedom here has a different dimension than in the USA or Europe, and everything can be confirmed with specific examples.

6. Business with common sense:

For those who run businesses and want to enjoy the freedom associated with entrepreneurship, the Caribbean can bring pleasant surprises. Here, common sense prevails over unnecessary regulations and bureaucracy, which can be liberating for those who are stressed by European standards.

These are just some of the aspects that led me to the decision to live in the Caribbean. I'm enjoying the unique lifestyle I can experience here, and I believe it could appeal to you too.

Why to choose the Roatan Island

Today, I'd like to share with you my thoughts and reasons why I chose Roatán Island in Honduras as my place to live in the Caribbean.

1. Roatán as a standalone island with abundant drinking water sources:

Roatán is considered the greenest island in the Caribbean. Its uniqueness lies in the large reservoir of underground drinking water. If you own land here, you can have a well drilled. Alternatively, rainwater can be collected in special tanks. Thanks to the large drinking water reserves, ocean-going vessels often stop here to replenish their water supplies before continuing their journey.

2. Stable climate:

Roatán is located in an area without hurricanes and other destructive natural disasters. Although minor earthquakes occasionally occur here, they are insignificant and resemble echoes from distant epicenters. The stable climate and minimized tornado risk attract not only tourists but also people intending to live here long term.

3. Infrastructure meeting international standards:

Roatán has an international airport, modern hospitals with accessible care, and international schools. The high level of these facilities is also due to the significant presence of Americans who live here and support the development of local infrastructure.

4. Security of private ownership:

Ownership in Roatán, whether it's land or houses, is properly recorded in the land registry. You have certainty of ownership rights, which facilitates inheritance. This is an advantage compared to other places where foreigners cannot own properties.

5. Low geopolitical dependence:

Roatán is not a strategically significant place, which means that it is not significantly affected by any major conflicts. This geopolitical neutrality can be an important factor when considering long-term residence in the region.

6. Diverse payment options:

The Lempira currency has its tradition on Roatán, but payments are also accepted in US dollars and even in Bitcoins. This flexibility in payment options provides residents and visitors to the island with freedom in handling financial transactions.

7. Cultural context and religion:

Roatán is known for its peacefulness, and its inhabitants are deeply religious. The absence of influence from different cultures and religions adds a unique Spanish flair and traditional values to the island.

These are just some of the aspects that led me to the decision to settle on Roatán. I enjoy everyday life in this beautiful Caribbean environment, which offers stability, safety, and a pleasant lifestyle.

Property purchase in the Caribbean – Practical Advice and Recommendations

If you decide to buy land or a house in the Caribbean on the island of Roatán, I have the following advice for you:

1. Clarify what you actually want. Are you looking for an investment? Then I recommend buying land that can lie and appreciate for a minimum of 3, but ideally 5 years. For these purposes, we have various options prepared for clients. The lands we deal with are mostly part of a project where people in the vicinity have purchased lands, have means, and are affluent, thus gradually increasing their value, as when someone starts building in the vicinity, it increases the value for you as well. It may even happen that we, as Green Hill Investments S.A., will be building in the vicinity for our clients who want a rental house here. Lands can be acquired for approximately $40,000.

2. Size of the land - here, we are used to having a large garden. You can also have a large space here, but in my opinion, there is no need for thousands of square meters for a garden, as a jungle will grow behind your house. Everything grows so fast here that it needs to be taken care of. Then you need a gardener, by which I mean if you have a house here. If it's just for investment, you can leave the land idle and support the local nature. Here, of course, larger areas can be purchased, depending on how much money you want to invest. Depending on where the land is located, the square meter costs approximately $80 to $300, depending, of course, on where the land is. Cheaper options can be found, as well as more expensive ones. I'm writing some typical price range.

3. Rental house - the house can range from small to large villa, depending on your budget, from tens of thousands of dollars. For it to be worth something, let's talk at least around $200,000 and above, depending on the material and size. Here, houses are built of wood, concrete, or a combination.

4. Legal service - you have legal services provided by us. We work with 5 local lawyers, depending on what is needed, and 3 notaries, each of them specializes in something else. Part of our legal service is the possibility to solve residency along with the purchase of land or a house, i.e., permanent residence. You can find the conditions on this website, in the residency section.

5. Property ownership - the property is registered in the local cadastre, so it is yours. You will receive all the documents and measurements for it. Everything is handled here in Spanish or English. Properties can be purchased in dollars, Bitcoin, and lempiras, which is the local currency. In exceptional cases, even in Czech crowns. When buying, you are governed exclusively by Honduran law, which is paramount.

6. Property for a physical person - you can buy up to 3,000 m2, if you want more, then either for someone else or you need to establish a company. We have established companies for sale, as well as we can arrange a company on request, if you are interested, just contact us and discuss what your priorities are and what you need to solve.

7. If you want to deal with a rental house or land for investment, you have these two options. Either you are in a resort, community, where you pay certain monthly fees, Fees, or you have land or a house outside this community. Here, you can choose how you want it with us. We offer both options. Lands and houses outside communities can be serviced just the same according to the valid price list of Green Hill Investments S.A. If you offer your house for rent through us, we will not rent out your house unless we receive a refundable deposit from clients, which is based on the value of the house equipment. Usually, the refundable deposit is $2,000. This ensures the protection of your property just as we do with our properties that we own or rent to our clients to ensure their satisfaction. And if something happens, we will solve the issue from the deposit. We will deduct the money from those who lived with you, buy the broken item, solve it, and only then return the rest of the deposit to protect your property. This seems to us like the cornerstone of protecting your house that you have here.

Caribbean for Families – Ideal destination for living and educating children in the Caribbean?

Many of you are asking whether the island here is ideal for living with children. Let's delve deeper into this topic.

At the beginning, it is very important to know what you will live on here, whether you have any income that continues from what you did before you moved here (e.g., IT, you have a company, a pension, etc.). You need to realize that it depends on how demanding you are and what standard of living you have? Did you buy the house on credit or with cash, do you have to pay it off or not?

If you have children here, an undeniable advantage is that they will eventually learn English and Spanish perfectly and fluently, count on it, even faster than adults. There are also Montessori schools for those of you who subscribe to this education, as well as international schools where education from this school is recognized in Europe as well. Or your children can study remotely or in the so-called homeschooling mode. And every six months, either remotely, online, or physically, children take exams in the Czech Republic. Some parents and children fly in person for retesting, everything depends on how you set it up and what suits you best. Your children can also go to school with local residents all over the island. International schools are more on the western side of the island, where the west and the center are more developed and there is more American and Canadian population living. In the east, it is rather calm and there are schools for local residents, not international, and this will definitely change over time. If you want to be here with children, I recommend the western side of the island, you don't want to drive the children an hour there and an hour back every day, it doesn't make sense in terms of time or economics. If you use an international school that recognizes the education your children will go through even in the Czech Republic.

Otherwise, if you or your children have any health problems, believe that the Caribbean island of Roatán is the ideal place for you and your family. Firstly, the weather here is very stable, where in winter the air temperature does not drop below 24 degrees, the sea is warmer than the air in winter. It is the greenest island in the Caribbean, there is drinking water under the entire island.

Of course, you can also buy American hamburgers here, I prefer to buy coconuts from local vendors for CZK 20 or ten peeled oranges for CZK 50, which are fresh. Everyone as they like it. If you are used to cooking, at the local market, you can get sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots, pineapples, cabbage, tomatoes, lettuce, and everything else your kitchen will appreciate. Just like you can get local honey or any seafood from our local friends, which is freshly caught from fish to lobsters, snappers, and I don't know what else. Having quality natural food is essential for the body.

Similarly, we are on the island, so the air that blows here, if you are not in traffic, is healing everywhere on the island, at higher altitudes or by the sea, as well as vitamin D, which is key to some processes in the body. About seawater and their healing abilities and minerals that take everything your body needs through the largest organ of your body, which is the skin, we don't even have to talk about.

What you really need is a car. You can't do without it. If you speak English, the taxi is more expensive, if you speak Spanish (note of the author - tourists don't speak much Spanish, mainly Americans), then the taxi is cheap and goes everywhere, but you need to know local prices, sometimes someone tries it like a tourist.

What is also worth mentioning, the sea here is very warm and suitable even for small children. Since there are plenty of resorts where there is very little water at the edge, even for small children who can play on the beach without you having any worries about them.

If you want to move here, I recommend that if you can, come here for 3 months, test everything on your own skin, and only then decide whether this piece of paradise is right for you or not. And even if you want to buy a house here. It is better to invest in rent for this period beforehand. And why 3 months? Honestly, in 3 weeks or a month you won't find out much. In 3 months, you have experience here and clarity whether yes or no, and also whether you miss the social bond you have in Europe.

So how will everything improve beyond the boundaries of this reality?

Caribbean Lifestyle – from beaches on West Bay to tranquil areas of Roatan Island

Roatán is a beautiful Caribbean island paradise. The western side, probably the most beautiful beach, ranked among the nicest and most renowned beaches in the world, is definitely West Bay, where you'll find beautiful white sand, crystal-clear water, simply the Caribbean.

The western side is very developed, and the island is changing before your eyes. On the west, you'll find bars and restaurants, as well as in West End, where you can choose from local chocolate shops, local chocolate production, a rum distillery with authentic Caribbean rum, to dolphins and zip-lining over the jungle. There are also five-star and four-star hotels with luxurious amenities, pools, restaurants, and nightlife. So if you're someone who enjoys these things, I recommend staying in this area.

Here on the west side, there are the most diving centers, as we are located on the second-largest coral reef in the world, right after Australia. So if you snorkel, you have a great opportunity to encounter beautiful marine life here.

If you drive from the west, there is a newly completed main concrete road as a circuit on the west side of the island, which contributes to the development of this side of the island over the east, but also benefits your car. From the west, you can either go to the brewery, which Czechs helped found, or to the capital city Coxen Hole, where you'll find everything you can think of. From supermarkets, which I tend to avoid and support local vendors and residents, to hospitals, and not one gas station, including American products such as ice cream or food from western corporations.

In Coxen Hole, we also have various markets where locals sell, which is something for me. Here you can buy everything, from cumin, which is not available in Eldon (a multinational supermarket something like Tesco), through fresh vegetables and fruit every day, shoes, all household equipment, and many other things you can think of. So you can choose very well whether you lean towards western-style dining from semi-finished products or rather cook from fresh ingredients that your bio machine desires. It's up to you.

To the west, giant ocean liners land, disgorging thousands of tourists onto the island every day. They move the economy not only locally but also significantly support Honduras and contribute greatly to its treasury.

Roatán is the pearl of the Caribbean. If you stay longer, don't forget to visit the surrounding nearby islands by boat.

Towards the east of the large ocean liners (Cruise), there is also the only large airport on the island, where you can get here either by flights from the USA or from the mainland. On the way east, the road you're driving on deteriorates, and there is a plan to resurface it. Along the way, you'll find towns, villages of locals, one backbone road leading all the way to the end of the island. Along the way, you can visit the iguana protection center, parrot attraction, monkeys, or local fish processing, where local fishermen bring their catches every morning, which are processed here. But you can also go buy fish, shrimp, and other seafood.

Further east, somewhere around the center of the island, there is also a Bitcoin center. Today, you can pay with Bitcoin on Roatán in about 60 or more local shops, restaurants, and Bitcoin is also accepted by our company Green Hill Investments S.A. For example, for accommodation or renting a car, scooter, or motorcycle, as well as buying land or a house.

Heading further east, you'll perceive more of the beauty of the raw island. If you're fans of tranquility, this will be for you.

Near the end of the island, there is another, still virgin beach, Camp Bay, where you'll find beautiful sand and sea and the real Caribbean. So far, without people. How long will it last? Hard to say. For now, that's how it is. Even on this side, buildings are being built, and the island is developing. Progress simply won't stop. At the end is the famous La Sirena, a bar and restaurant where you can get Rum punch, a local drink. In half a liter, you get about 1:1 real Caribbean rum and juice.

If you were to sail further, you would reach beautiful mangroves, which can be navigated to nearby islands such as St. Helena or Piguin, where you can dive with nurse sharks and reef sharks that won't harm you.

If you want to go, you can also use our services if you feel it's beneficial for you. So what do you say?

Bitcoin Academy in Roatan. Not possible? Come see for yourself :)

A while ago we played with the idea of opening a Bitcoin Academy. We envisioned it as a place where people who like to think about the topic of freedom, "healthy money" can meet in person and from where we could fulfill our mission to educate 100,000,000 people about Bitcoin. The number is not purely random, it represents the number of satoshis in 1 bitcoin. On the way to Roatan for vacation, we didn't think that it would be Honduras where we would open our Bitcoin Academy, or the first Bitcoin Education Center in Honduras - https://www.amityage.com/

It was March 2022 when we decided to explore the beauty of Roatan, a Caribbean island with the second largest coral reef in the world. When a friend told us about Roatan, we had no idea what IT was and where IT was located. Of course, it made us all the more eager to get to know THAT, to get to know IT. By coincidence, during our vacation in Roatan, Build Prospera Summit 2022 was organized. It was an informal meeting of travelers, entrepreneurs who were interested in the Prospera project and came to explore what they can build together. We had never heard of the Prospera project before. We found out that Prospera is a private city and a special economic zone (ZEDE - Zone for Employment and Economic Development). It encourages economic development and innovation through low taxes, privatized government, social services and self-regulation. Prospera is independent from the structure of Honduras, but remains bound by the Honduran constitution and its criminal code. The reason why we started to join the group of people interested in the project was that in Prospera you do not pay taxes on bitcoin profits and at the same time you can pay ordinary taxes in bitcoin. Apart from the very friendly tax regime, you can currently keep your bookkeeping in bitcoin. Setting up a company in Prospera takes exactly 15 minutes and filing VAT takes 5 minutes. Prospera absolutely won us over when compared to the bureaucracy in Slovakia. So we used the above-mentioned summit to present our ideas about the Bitcoin Education Center and immediately we received an offer to rent a building on the highest point of Roatan with the best view. And so, in November 2022, we opened the first Bitcoin Education Center in Honduras. I have to say, not quite ordinary.

In our center, in addition to improving your financial literacy, you will also sharpen your taste buds. In addition to great Honduran coffee and island-inspired food, you'll enjoy stunning 360-degree views of Roatan. You can pay for everything with bitcoin, that is, except for the view, which is free :) We go with the narrative that our academy is the place where you can pay with dollars and lempiras (legal currency of Honduras) only once in your lifetime. Are you asking why? Because in our academy we will teach you how to use bitcoin, practically and simply. We will guide you through the journey from setting up a bitcoin wallet, through buying your first satoshi (part of a bitcoin) to paying for your coffee with bitcoin. So you don't have to be a millionaire to get a "piece" of bitcoin for yourself.

In our education center you can take advantage of the first and only Bitcoin ATM in Roatan. You can buy bitcoin for USD cash here and also sell it for USD with no fees. However, we are not the only place where you can pay with bitcoin. There is already a community of local merchants (approx. 60) on the island, which you can support by paying in bitcoin. You can rent a car, go diving or pay for the services of a dentist. Regardless of whether you are new to Bitcoin or well versed in it and just want to meet other colleagues, you can join us on the Bitcoin Experience Tour of Roatan. We will show you the attractions of this pirate island and take you to the facilities that accept payments in bitcoins.

Our mission is to educate locals and visitors about the future of money. The best thing you can do for yourself and your financial future is to learn what makes Bitcoin special and start using it. We teach people the basics of how to secure their bitcoins, how to avoid scams, and how to be financially responsible. For locals, using Bitcoin makes much more sense than for Europeans, who see Bitcoin more as an alternative investment. Both banks and credit cards work in Europe - in Honduras, the banking system is more complex, so people are more aware of the benefits that Bitcoin brings. At the same time, Honduras is a country neighboring El Salvador (the first country where Bitcoin is official currency), so people are more receptive to the fact that Bitcoin even exists and that it is not a scam.

We finance our educational activities thanks to Bitcoin mining in Paraguay. We donate a significant portion of our profits to the community and invest back into our educational program. More than 2,500 people have personally attended our educational workshops. Anyone can buy mining machines from us and mine with us. In addition to an interesting investment, you can support our educational activities.

So, in Roatan, we managed to create a place where you can practically learn everything you need to know about the history of money, about money as such and why we consider Bitcoin to be digital gold, or sound money.

There is a word in english. Very archaic one, not very used “AMITY”. Amity means fellowship, friendship, cooperation, peace and harmony. We see Bitcoin as a technology that can lead us to an era where people will work together more thanks to a globally sound money. We believe that it will lead us to an age of better cooperation, harmony and togetherness. To the age of friendship. AmityAge. That is why we decided to name our company AmityAge, so that every day we are reminded of where we are going and what Bitcoin brings us.
